Italian chessboard in alabaster and onice with an alabaster border, dating to 1970–1980, 33.5 cm wide and 2.8 cm high, complete with 32 alabaster pawns in two natural tones.
Description from the seller
Chessboard with complete alabaster and onyx set – Italy, 1970s/1980s – 36.5 × 36.5 cm
Elegant vintage Italian chessboard dating from the 1970s/1980s, handcrafted in precious alabaster and natural onyx, complete with its original set of 32 pieces also carved in alabaster in two natural tones, ivory and brown.
The board measures 36.5 × 36.5 cm and is composed of 4 × 4 cm squares, obtained by joining carefully selected slabs. The white alabaster shows the typical milky, translucent veining, while the brown onyx offers spectacular amber, hazelnut, and green shades, making each square unique. The outer frame, also in alabaster, adds elegance and continuity to the entire composition.
The pieces, fully turned and hand-carved, are well proportioned to the board and provide a pleasing aesthetic balance. The King measures 7.4 cm, while the Queen is 6.5 cm. The classic shapes, combined with the natural luster of the polished alabaster, make this set refined both for playing and as a decorative accessory.
In the 1970s and 1980s Italy was among the world’s leading producers of natural stone chessboards, exported to Europe and the United States as prestigious objects intended for professional studios, libraries, and elegant residences. Even today these pieces are appreciated for the quality of the materials and craftsmanship.
The condition is very good. There is a tiny chip on one corner of the chessboard, practically invisible when displayed, and one of the knights has a small notch at the tip of an ear, also hardly noticeable and not aesthetically compromising. Otherwise the set is complete, stable, and fully usable.
Our interior designer recommends this set as a decorative element for a study, library, classic or contemporary living room, where it can become a refined focal point capable of uniting art, design, and functionality.
Photos are an integral part of the description.
We guarantee highly professional packaging, using materials specifically designed for fragile objects, so that the lot reaches the new owner in the best possible condition.
