This rustic matching pair of pagoda iron toro is handcrafted by the Nanbu Iwachu workshop using traditional sand casting techniques from Japan’s late Showa era. The pieces serve three purposes: ambient lighting, incense burning and decorative display for tea tables (茶席).

Nambu Tekki ironware carries a well-established 400-year casting tradition. Pagoda-style garden toro are classic ornamental pieces for Japanese tea rooms and courtyard spaces.

Each lantern features a four-sided hip-and-gable pavilion structure with embossed layered roof tiles, recreating the architectural aesthetic of Japanese shrine lanterns. One side is equipped with an openable pierced panel; all four faces are carved with continuous auspicious interlocking scroll patterns. The hollow openwork delivers gentle, elegant light and shadow effects when illuminated. A hanging ring is fitted on the roof peak, supported by four outward-splayed stable feet. As an original matching set, the two lanterns are nearly identical in shape, size and carved detailing.

Every piece retains its original dark matte iron patina formed naturally over time, presenting a coarse authentic metallic texture. A circular inner platform holds tea candles or incense sticks, and the pierced structure enables smooth circulation of light and smoke. Each lantern is solid sand-cast as a single unit with no welded seams. Sharp, defined openwork reliefs balance the rugged traditional texture characteristic of Nambu Tekki with delicate decorative carving.

Vertical cast maker seals reading Nanbu Iwachu (南部岩铸) are stamped on the inner roof of each lantern, with identical markings on both pieces.

Natural uniform patina oxidation has formed across the surface over time, with abrasion visible on edges from long-term display. Neither lantern has chips, cracks or restorations. The matching pair is fully intact, and overall condition is good for its period.
