Description from the seller

Rare first edition of this interesting account of the journey undertaken by the Frenchman Alfred Driou to Naples and its surroundings in the mid-nineteenth century.

After boarding in Marseille, the author arrives in Naples and describes the city’s beauties, together with experiences of climbing Vesuvius, visiting the Phlegraean Fields and the ruins of Posillipo. Subsequently the narrative covers the localities visited in the surrounding area: the ancient cities of Pompeii, Baiae, Miseno, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis and Paestum and the modern ones of Castellammare, Sorrento, Salerno, Amalfi, Caserta, Aversa. Naturally, excursions to the islands of Capri, Nisida, Ischia and Procida are not missing.

Alfred Driou, Naples. Les magnificences de son Golfe et les curiosités de ses rivages..., Limoges, Imprimerie de Barbou Frères, [1860 approx.].

PP.: 235, (I). COMPLETE, with 4 plates out of text in lithography.

Copy with maps in overall good-to-very good condition, with the usual signs of use and time and some scattered foxing.
