Sculpture, Krishna Venugopala - 45.5 cm - Wood

Truly magnificently detailed wooden sculpture of the Hindu god Krishna, depicted specifically as Venugopala (the flute-playing shepherd). The sculpture shows Krishna in the classical tribhanga pose (a triple-bent posture) while he plays the flute. The accompanying cow symbolizes love, compassion, and his role as "Gopala", the protector of cows. Above him is a Kirtimukha (a mythical 'face of glory') visible in the arch (prabhavali). The sculpture was made in the mid-20th century.
