Description from the seller
Beautiful 19th-century Bronze Mortar with Original Pestle –
An authentic, early 19th-century bronze mortar of high quality, complete with the original, perfectly fitting pestle.
This splendid ensemble is an excellent example of "Haute Époque" metalwork from the Low Countries or Southern Netherlands.
The mortar is undecorated, indicating that this was purely a utilitarian object for kitchen or apothecary use.
The pestle undeniably belongs with the mortar: the profiled rings fit exactly against the wide rim of the mortar and the bulbous head nests seamlessly into the hollowness of the base.
The object shows a brilliant patina with natural wear spots that confirm its age and authenticity.
There are no pouring marks or inscriptions present.
A beautiful object with a very clear and long-lasting tone.
