The initials "HW & CO" correspond to Henry Wilkinson & Co, a prestigious silversmith firm from Sheffield, England. The piece is a classic example of the Victorian taste for ornamentation and rustic themes, such as the figure of the seated cow, a traditional emblem of butter dishes from this era.
