Tremulierstrich: The tremulier line is the zigzag line visible on some old silver objects, which occurred when, during the inspection of the piece, the inspecting or assaying master, who was appointed by the guilds, took material for sampling. Since silver in pure form is too soft for processing and can only be worked in combination with other metals (alloys), after stamping the master mark the required silver fineness (which can vary by city and country) was checked by the assayer, with a flat chisel taking a silver sample. The zigzag line was created in this process. Only after this test did the “sound” piece receive the corresponding city mark, or the fineness stamp, the assay mark. Silbersuit
