Greek Icon of St. George
1. Object
Wooden icon with depiction of Saint George as dragon-slayer. Modern Greek icon from the second half of the 20th century, presumably from a Cretan workshop with certificate.
2. Dating
The attached certificate indicates production in 1969. Style, painting technique, and execution align with high-quality workshop works of that period.
3. Material and technique
Wooden panel with chalk ground (Levkas), egg tempera and gold leaf. The painting technique follows the Byzantine icon tradition.
4. Iconography
Saint George appears as a triumphant rider-saint. The defeated dragon symbolizes the triumph of faith over evil.

The composition follows the typology of the Cretan school, whose works have held great significance since the 16th century and were consciously continued in the 20th century.
