Description from the seller

Antique Sterzinger horn snuff box – South Tyrol – Early 19th century (Double-sided engraving)

Description:
Beautiful and authentic example of an early 19th-century Sterzinger horn snuff box (Sterzinger Horndose) from South Tyrol. This type of rare folk art is known for the highly detailed, hand-engraved engravings (scrimshaw technique) that are tinted with pigments.
This specific piece is above-average sought after due to the rare, double-sided high-quality decoration:

Top side (Lid): A classic Alpine landscape with a group of deer and roe under a richly decorated border of traditional floral motifs.

Bottom side (Base): A beautifully worked village scene of a typical Alpine village with a small chapel and houses against a mountain landscape, finished with fine flowers.

Sides: Throughout, finely ornamented borders, including ducks swimming in the water under the sun and a mountain hut.

Condition:
The box is in a beautiful, authentic state with fantastic preservation of the red and green pigments. The brass hinge and the original brass pins on the inside are in good, working condition. Suitable for the respectable age of over 200 years and the natural material, there are some light drying cracks and a few small edge chips missing (see photos). This is inherent to antique horn and does not diminish the exceptional decorative value of this collectible.

Specifications:
Length: 7.8 cm
Width: 5.4 cm
Height: 2.2 cm
Material: Horn & Brass
Period: approx. 1800 - 1830
