IWC - Day-Date - IW3702 - Men - 1980-1989

The Titanium Chronograph presented in 1980 was the first titanium wristwatch. It’s hard to believe nowadays, given the abundance of titanium models, but at the time it was a big novelty. No one used titanium back then: it was an expensive material, difficult to machine, and used exclusively in the aerospace industry. The engineers at IWC accepted the challenge and developed new techniques for processing this exotic material; thus they were able to realize Porsche Design’s vision, which aimed for a chronograph with a refined and minimalist look.

The watch was not only an innovation in materials. The pushers were also integrated in an excellent way (in keeping with a design still used today in the Porsche Design Monobloc Actuator series), and the titanium bracelet was perfectly in tune with the watch’s aesthetics. It was this watch that definitively brought the collaboration between Porsche Design and IWC to light, dispelling any doubt about the outstanding competence of both companies. The first series does not feature the Porsche Design logo.
