You are bidding on a VERY LARGE, hand-signed Knitting & Painting by the German, highly significant post-war artist Herbert Zangs. The Zangs expert Helgard Müller-Jensen dates the work to 1976 and confirms this work as an original by the artist with an extensive description.

The speckled knittings are the best-known works by Zangs, followed by the white relief and wiper paintings. In the white overpaintings, the psychological disposition, the act of repainting as a symbol of covering and sealing, is in the foreground.
Zangs creates here, with the knotted corks, an irregular relief, where he, as in all knits, follows the same strategy: the apparent monotony of similarity is broken by subtle interventions of color application and the progression of color. Thus, the unmistakable dynamic arises, characteristic of the artist’s work.

This is a painting on fabric. The artist used white acrylic paint, overpainted the texture of the fabric and the embedded corks with opaque white. The knitting fascinated Zangs; the irregularity of the fabric created by the embedded corks was the complete opposite of the structured sequences he almost simultaneously produced.

Excerpt from the certificate of the eyewitness and fellow traveler from 1961 to 1983 and owner of Galerie Rottloff in Karlsruhe, established since 1961:

"I have known Herbert Zangs and his studio since 1959 and visited many of his exhibitions in the early 60s. He worked in my workshop and gallery from 1961 to 1983. Well over one hundred works were created during this time. He also brought many works to my gallery during this time that were created in other studios and took many works from my studio as well."

The painting is in very good condition. The work shows the material choices and handling typical of a Herbert Zangs piece (usage and aging traces in reused material, paint wear and small losses of paint as well as contamination from storage, slight canvas waviness and material-induced cracking in the paint layer).

This work is supplied with a certificate from the gallerist and Zangs expert, long-time confidante, eyewitness and life partner of Herbert Zangs, Mrs. Helgard Müller-Jensen (Galerie Rottloff, Karlsruhe), who personally confirms the authenticity of the work.
