Bronze sculpture patinated – bearded Bacchus / Silenus with serpent – Grand Tour / Neoclassical style (19th/20th century)

Splendid and elegant figurative sculpture in dark patinated bronze, rich in strong Dionysian symbolism and depicting Bacchus in his mature iconography (or Silenus, his wise tutor and companion of the procession).
Bacchanal symbolism: The expressive face framed by a thick beard is topped by a wreath of evergreen leaves of ivy or grape. With the left arm encircled by a serpent — the classic symbol linked to Dionysian cults and rites — the figure supports a circular plate finely decorated with palmette motifs, originally conceived as a lantern, lamp-holder or censer.

It rests on a solid circular base worked in relief with motifs of tendrils and botanical elements. The casting presents a beautiful dark patina and a notable rendering of the muscles and the drapery.
