A beautiful, handmade tribal amulet-hanger (known as Ta'wiz or Hirz) from the nomadic Kuchi people from the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan. This characteristic prayer box originally served as a protective amulet and features a functional hinge closure at the top, in which traditionally a protective prayer or Quran verse was kept. Made between 1950 and 1970.
The front of the pendant is richly decorated with a triangular and square motif, inlaid with vibrant, multicolored glass elements (glass paste with foil backing) that imitate gemstones. Centrally on the pendant is the traditional symbol of the crescent moon. The bottom and sides are fitted with hand-soldered loops with jingling bells (ghungroos), which according to old folk beliefs ward off evil spirits.
The back shows beautifully the authentic, artisanal soldering and the natural patina of the silver alloy. Silver alloy (coin silver / tribal silver) and inlaid colored glass. A rare and characterful collectible for enthusiasts of ethnographic art and tribal jewelry.
