Description from the seller

Borghese Gladiator Torso – Large plaster cast

Dimensions: Height 95 cm – Width 60 cm – Depth 50 cm
Material: Patinated plaster
A plaster sculpture depicting the renowned Borghese Torso, one of the most important representations of classical antiquity.

The work faithfully reproduces the renowned Hellenistic marble kept in the Vatican Museums, long regarded as an absolute model for the study of anatomy and the human form.

This exemplar, of remarkable size (95 cm), comes from a plaster collection from the previous century, specifically the early 1900s; it conveys all the extraordinary plastic tension of the back, the buttocks, and the musculature, elements that have made the Torso one of the most admired masterpieces in art history.

The original sculpture is attributed to the Greek sculptor Apollonius of Athens (1st century BC) and was rediscovered during the Renaissance. The sculpture entered the Borghese family collection, from which it derives the name by which it is universally known. Michelangelo regarded it as an unrivaled work and even refused to complete the missing parts, believing that its expressive power lay precisely in its incompleteness. The Torso deeply influenced artists such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Rubens, Canova, and numerous sculptors of the nineteenth century.

Large plaster casts like this were made for academies of fine arts, sculpture studios, and private collections, where they formed indispensable tools for the study of drawing, modeling, and artistic anatomy.

The piece exhibits the natural materiality of plaster and the charm of traditional high-quality didactic blends. Ideal as an interior decor element for classical and contemporary interiors, professional studios, galleries, and collections dedicated to ancient art.

Dimensions: 95 × 60 × 50 cm
Material: plaster.
Conditions: good overall condition, with slight signs of age compatible with the material and its nature.

Packaging and transport are handled in a dedicated manner.
