Mask - Nepal - 1960-1970 - Vajra Protector Mask

This is a classic Tibetan Buddhist mask depicting a green-bodied Vajra protector, known in Tibetan as the Mahakala protector. It features a five-skull crown symbolizing the elimination of the five poisons (greed, hatred, and delusion); a vertical wisdom eye on the forehead; glaring, fierce eyes; flaming, curled eyebrows; and a wide mouth revealing sharp fangs, exuding a powerful and intimidating presence. Spiral auspicious earrings adorn the ears. The overall color scheme follows traditional Tibetan mineral pigment painting techniques, with the green body representing compassion and harmony, and the red markings symbolizing wrath and subjugation. The back of the mask is flat, pre-installed for hanging. The entire set is crafted using traditional Tibetan wood carving and painting techniques. It is made from a single piece of high-density, hardwood from the plateau, with artisans meticulously carving deep, three-dimensional reliefs. The skulls, facial features, and cloud patterns are meticulously carved layer by layer, creating a strong sense of depth and dimension. The wood is sturdy and resistant to warping and cracking. A mixture of natural Tibetan mineral pigments and raw lacquer is applied in layers, repeatedly sealed and polished, resulting in a durable and moisture-resistant finish. Over time, this lacquer develops a warm, aged patina, ensuring long-lasting color and preventing fading.
