AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Northwest Africa 17323 (NWA 17323)

Purchased: 2024

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK6)

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Chondritic breccia, consisting of chondritic lithic clasts up to 1 cm, embedded in fine-grained related debris. In the clasts, chondrules, chondrule fragments, and CAIs are embedded in a recrystallized dark brown matrix, which is interspersed with Cr-bearing magnetite grains and nodules. The range of apparent chondrule sizes is 500-1500 µm.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Mean olivine composition: Fa32.7±0.4 (Fa32.0-33.3-y); n=12; NiO: 0.54 wt%. Mean low-Ca pyroxene composition: Fs27.8±0.5Wo0.6±0.2 (Fs27.2-28.9Wo0.4-1.0); n=10. Mean composition of Ca-rich pyroxene: Fs9.4±0.4 Wo46.6±0.5 (Fs8.9-9.8Wo45.8-47.6); n=12. Magnetite shows significant concentrations of elements other than Fe (mean, wt%): MgO 0.4; Al2O3 1.8 TiO2 0.5; Cr2O3 5.5; NiO 0.3 (n=5).

Classification: CK chondrite based on texture and mineral chemistry. Petrologic type 6 based on the equilibrated state of olivine and pyroxene, and large grain size of secondary plagioclase.

Shock stage: C-S4
Weathering grade: low
Classifier: K. Metzler, IfP.
