Description from the seller
Charming numbered edition 1444 and composed of 106 color folios concerning the art of health through diet and medicinal plants, and the costumes and trades related to these subjects in northern Italy, at the end of the Middle Ages -
The commentary first places the work in its historical context by explaining the foundations of Hippocratic-Galenic medicine, based on the theory of the four humors, according to which health results from the balance between blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile, a balance constantly influenced by diet, climate, seasons, physical activity, sleep, emotions and daily habits -
The authors methodically analyze each of the chapters of the Tacuinum, which present in note form the foods, plants, fruits, cereals, meats, fishes, drinks, spices, medicinal plants as well as the various human activities, indicating their qualities, therapeutic properties, their beneficial or harmful effects -
A large part of the commentary is devoted to the famous illuminations that accompany the Tacuinum Sanitatis manuscripts, true masterpieces of medieval art, realistically depicting agricultural work, gardens, orchards, harvests, markets, kitchens, crafts, hunting scenes, medical practices and daily life in the countryside as well as in the cities -
