Description from the seller

ARISTOPHANES

Comedies.
Translations from Greek by M. Artaud

Paris, at Brissot-Thivars, 1830.

6 volumes in-16 (12 x 7.5 cm), brown half-morocco (binding of the period), decorated spine, marbled edges, [4]-cxxiii-163-[1]; [4]-285-[2]; [4]-271-[1]; [4]-298-[1]; [4]-290-[1]; [4]-257-[2] pages (complete). Very good condition.

Born around 445 BC, Aristophanes was the greatest comic poet of Athens. From his private life we know very little. An Athenian from the deme of Kydatheneia, just like his bete noire, Cleon, his family would have owned lands on Aegina. Under a pen name, he began at the Theater of Dionysus in 427 with the Babylonians. His talent was quickly recognized and he won a first prize in 425 with the Acharnians, then the following year with the Knights. He is said to have written 44 plays.

Fine copy.
