SHEAFFER SNORKEL CREST VINTAGE FOUNTAIN PEN (U.S., 1950s):
We present at auction one of the most fascinating and mechanically complex fountain pens ever manufactured: the Sheaffer Snorkel. Introduced in 1952, this pen revolutionized the market with a filling system that allowed the reservoir to be filled without immersing the nib in the ink, thanks to a small tube (the snorkel) that magically extended from the feed.
This unit corresponds to the coveted and elegant Crest model. It stands out for its beautiful Gold-Filled cap decorated with a fine pattern of vertical lines, crowned by the emblematic clip with the “White Dot” of Sheaffer. The body is made of polished black resin, creating a classic and timeless contrast.
Topping the grip section, we find its imposing 14K Triumph nib. Manufactured in solid 14-karat gold, this nib surrounds the feed (a design sometimes referred to as the “swallow’s tail”) and is famous for its rigidity, extreme smoothness, and ability to write even upside down, offering an unparalleled calligraphic experience.
Condition (Expert Review)
Collectors are asked to closely study the photo gallery. The pen is in magnificent aesthetic condition for its more than 70 years:
Resin and Cap: The Gold-Filled cap is pristine, with no dents and retaining all its shine. The black resin body shows no cracks or deep marks, only very light micro-scratches ("hairs") from careful use.
Nib: The 14K Triumph nib is in excellent cosmetic condition.
Mechanism: The rear section deploys properly, operating the output of the front Snorkel tube. (Expert note: The Snorkel system is the pinnacle of vintage engineering and includes several sacs and rubber O-rings inside. Being an antique piece, it is common for it to require a tune-up or replacement of these seals by a professional to ensure a perfect vacuum and optimal daily use. It is sold as is, without original case).
Shipping
The item will be carefully protected and securely packed, with insured shipping and an international tracking number.
A fantastic opportunity to add to your collection a masterpiece from the Sheaffer golden age! Best of luck to all bidders!
