Description from the seller
Item Description
This lot comprises a set of two Japanese lacquer natsume (tea caddies), each used to hold matcha powder in the tea ceremony (chanoyu). Both pieces are finished in glossy black lacquer and decorated in gold hiramaki-e.
The larger natsume features a samurai helmet (kabuto) on the lid, paired with a bow and arrow motif on the body, evoking Boys' Day (Tango no Sekku) warrior imagery. Its interior is lacquered in vivid red, a traditional contrast finish. The smaller natsume displays a stylized origami crane (orizuru) on the lid, with arrow motifs echoing the design of its companion piece, and a plain black lacquered interior.
Each caddy consists of a lid and a rounded body that fits together with a snug friction seal, a hallmark of well-made natsume construction. The lacquer surfaces retain good gloss overall.
Size
Height: 7 cm
Width: 6.5 cm
Depth: 6.5 cm
(Measurements given for the larger natsume; the second piece is of similar, slightly smaller scale.)
Weight
127 g
(Total weight of the larger natsume, including lid.)
Condition
Both natsume are in good used condition, consistent with age. The lacquer shows minor surface scuffs and light wear typical of handling, with no major losses to the gold decoration observed on close inspection.
