Antique trade-wind beads - zanzibar

Beautiful antique glass beads of different designs and colours. The light-blue beads are of Syrian origin and were produced in this country in the 15-17th Cent. These beads were easily transported to the Islamic east-coast of East-Africa i.g. the sultanate of Oman in present-day Zanzibar. At this period European competition was almost absent. The smaller coloured beads (yellow, brown, green) are of Indian origin and are from the same period. These are the so-called "trade-wind' beads , using the monsoon winds to travel from India to East-Africa. All these beads are found in the sands of the beaches of Zanzibar. The beads have been fashioned into small necklaces with a small lock. Collected in Zanzibar in the early 2000,s.
