Antique Peranakan silver brooch clasp with a trumpet closure, ca. 1900, dimensions 40 × 45 mm and weight 9 g, origin Indonesia.
Description from the seller
Antique Peranakan / Straits-Chinese Silver Brooch - Clasp Conversion with Trumpet Closure - circa 1900
This object is an antique or vintage silver clasp (likely the hinge of a two-piece belt buckle or transformed into jewelry), characterized by a finely pierced openwork Asian or colonial design.
The design features a detailed peacock or phoenix surrounded by floral motifs such as peonies. This type of handcrafted silverwork is very typical of Peranakan (Straits Chinese) or colonial Asian styles from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.
The brooch has a trumpet clasp (also called a withdrawal clasp or trumpet spring clasp). In this specific mechanism, you must pull a tube outward to release the pin. This locking mechanism confirms that the piece was adapted or made around the turn of the century (1900). It reinforces the suspicion of a colonial connection (such as the former Dutch East Indies or the British Straits Settlements). The silver base is locally Asian handiwork, but the mounting was professionally done at the time with newer Western fittings for a European owner.
Weight is 9 grams.
