It is a devotional box from the first half of the 20th century that combines the warmth of soft wood with the nobility of a leather finish, creating that balance so characteristic of domestic religious pieces from the period. The scene depicted—the Virgin handing the cope to Saint Ildefonso—occupies the entire lid with a luminous and deeply narrative composition: the Virgin, elevated and surrounded by a soft halo, lowers the sacred cloth toward the saint, who appears kneeling, gathered, with that reverent attitude that defines his traditional iconography. Around them, secondary figures and angels complete the scene with an almost theatrical air, typical of the popular interpretations of late Baroque that continued to be present in 20th-century craftsmanship.

The painting, applied to the leather surface, shows vivid colors and a gentle modeling, unpretentious academically, but with a clear intention to convey devotion and beauty. The lid frame, also worked in leather, incorporates a decorative frieze that frames the image and gives it the presence of a small portable altarpiece. The wooden structure, lightweight and with an open grain, preserves natural aging that adds authenticity, especially visible on the back, where the leather shows signs of the passage of time: small abrasions, darkening, and that softly cracked texture that only appears in pieces that have been used and preserved for decades.

The front, with its metal lock, reinforces the idea of an intimate object, meant to store documents, memories, or items of cult. Taken together, the box is a perfect example of popular religious craftsmanship, where technique serves iconography and where each material—wood, leather, paint—contributes to creating a warm, symbolic piece imbued with history.
