Description from the seller
Pair of altar jugs - Vieux Paris - France, 19th century. Elegant pair of altar jugs in French porcelain from Vieux Paris, produced during the 19th century, notable for the exuberance of their decoration and the high artistic quality, characteristics of Parisian manufactories of the period. With a robust body resting on a widened foot, they present a-cut silhouette and a wavy upper rim, richly molded, giving the pieces a dynamic outline and a strong decorative impact. The sides are enriched by relief applications of stylized foliate motifs in green tones, while the lower area displays delicate clusters of molded and gilt berries, elements typical of Rocaille ornamentation reinterpreted in the 19th century. The decoration is executed in a delicate polychromy, featuring exuberant hand-painted floral sprays with tulips, irises and other garden flowers on a white background. Broad cobalt blue reserves are profusely enriched with gold relief ornamentation of scrolls, foliage and arabesques, extending to the edge, foot, and other decorative elements. The gilding, applied in fine gold, gives the pieces a sumptuous appearance and highlights the quality of the workmanship. Porcelains known as Vieux Paris do not correspond to a single factory, but to a set of Parisian workshops active from the late 18th to the mid-19th century, renowned for producing luxury porcelains destined for churches, palaces, and the homes of the European upper middle class. For their floral iconography, rich chromatics, and excellent execution, these jugs constitute a beautiful example of 19th-century French decorative porcelain, also suitable for use in liturgical contexts or classical decoration. Condition: Good overall condition.
