Rare Sardinian briar artisanal pipe – First production by Master Tom Spanu
Presented is a fine artisanal pipe signed Tom Spanu, an authentic expression of the Sardinian pipe school, made from noble Erica Arborea briar and dated 1980, as reported by the original punch mark incised on the stem.

In this specimen the number 1980 is interpreted as the year of production, belonging to the maestro’s very early work after returning to Sardinia and opening his own workshop, which happened in 1979. The pipe therefore represents a rare testimony of the initial phase of his independent production.

Story of Master Tom Spanu
Tommaso "Tom" Spanu was born in Chiaramonti, in northern Sardinia. After moving to the Varese area in 1962, he learned the craft in important Italian workshops, gaining over fifteen years of experience in briar work.
In 1979 he definitively returned to Sardinia and founded his own artisanal workshop, choosing to use exclusively the finest Sardinian Erica Arborea briar, gathered and selected directly in the territory. From that moment began Tom Spanu’s branded production, destined to become one of the most appreciated in the contemporary Italian school.
The maestro’s philosophy was deeply linked to nature: every block of briar spontaneously suggested the pipe’s shape, which is why almost all of his production consists of Freehand pieces, unique and not linked to industrial models.
The pipe
This specimen is a refined Freehand made entirely by hand.

The harmonious line arises from the natural form of the briar, fully respecting its grain. The bowl features an elegant hand-rusted edge, while the body maintains a smooth finish that enhances the wood’s quality.
The shank is adorned with a natural horn insert, elegantly joined to the original amber-marbled acrylic mouthpiece, a characteristic element of Tom Spanu’s early production. Completing the composition is a small decorative green insert, typical of some pieces produced in the early 1980s.
