Onyx derives its name, in Greek onyks, from its resemblance to nails, but the Romans nicknamed it marmor alabastrum, a name that comes from a fortress known as “Alabastra” built in Thebes, an area with numerous quarries for temple construction.
When the term onyx is used, two very different rock families are indicated: siliceous onyx, generally black striped with white, and calcitic onyx.
Onyx is a very precious yet delicate material, comparable to glass. Its main characteristic is translucency, and thus it can be backlit.
Mineralogically it is classified as a variety of chalcedony, i.e., quartz in compact microcrystalline masses, of an opaque or uniformly semi-opaque hue. Onyx is typically extracted in India, Mexico, Iran, Turkey, Brazil, Uruguay, and Madagascar.

Being an antique object, a genuine vintage piece, it may show slight signs of wear, entirely normal and characteristic of its history.
