Parts of the Campo-del-Cielo meteorite, an iron meteorite, were first discovered in 1576 in present-day Argentina. A Spanish governor heard reports from indigenous peoples that iron had fallen from the sky. He dispatched an expedition that brought back several fragments. The discovery site, a water-scarce plain, bore the fitting name Campo del Cielo (Field of Heaven)
