Description:
A beautifully crafted Japanese bamboo flower basket (hanakago) designed for traditional ikebana flower arrangement, accompanied by a removable black cylindrical inner container.
The basket has a tall, gently rounded form with a prominent arched handle. It is constructed from numerous narrow strips of bamboo woven in a deliberately free and irregular openwork pattern. The overlapping diagonal strips create a lively network of lines, giving the basket an organic and highly sculptural appearance.
The bamboo has developed an attractive warm reddish-brown tone, enhanced by a polished surface that brings out the natural variations in the material. The upper rim and lower section are reinforced with additional horizontal bands, while the handle is carefully braided from multiple bamboo strands for both strength and decorative effect.
Inside the basket is a separate black cylindrical water container, often referred to as an otoshi. This removable insert allows fresh flowers and branches to be arranged with water while protecting the woven bamboo structure. When placed inside, the dark container is partially visible through the open weave, creating an attractive contrast with the warm color of the bamboo.
Bamboo flower baskets became an important element of Japanese ikebana culture and are particularly appreciated for the way their natural materials and expressive weaving complement seasonal flowers, grasses and branches. The intentionally irregular arrangement of the bamboo strips gives this example a particularly dynamic character, balancing rustic simplicity with refined craftsmanship.
The basket can be displayed either as a functional ikebana vessel or as an independent sculptural decorative object. Its strong silhouette and open lattice construction also make it well suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
