Description from the seller
Gevrey-Chambertin 1978 "Réserve des Dieux" – Mövenpick Cellars, Bursins – Côte de Nuits – 4 bottles (75cl)
Lot of 4 bottles of Gevrey-Chambertin from the great vintage 1978, under the historic label "Réserve des Dieux", selected at production by Caves Mövenpick SA in Bursins (Vaud, Switzerland). A homogeneous set from the same private cellar, stored horizontal.
THE APPELLATION
Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest and one of the most prestigious appellations of the Côte de Nuits. Cradle of Chambertin — the favorite wine of Napoleon — it includes nine Grands Crus, a record in Burgundy. Its Pinot Noir grapes are distinguished by power, structure and aromatic depth: black fruits, liquorice, undergrowth and spices, evolving with time toward leather, truffle and game.
THE BRAND "RÉSERVE DES DIEUX"
"Réserve des Dieux" was a cuvée selected by Mövenpick Cellars, the wine division of the famous Swiss group Mövenpick, whose cellars were established in Bursins, on the slopes of La Côte Vaudoise. As the label indicates, each cuvée was chosen by the Master of the Cellar of the house directly in the producer’s cellars, "for the authenticity of its terroir, the purity of its bouquet, the luster of its robe, its harmony and balance". These bottles reflect a time when major Swiss merchants selected and bottled Burgundy crus for their clientele.
VINTAGE 1978
1978 is regarded as one of the very great vintages of modern Burgundy. After a cool summer and an exceptionally warm and sunny September — the famous "September miracle" — the grapes reached remarkable ripeness. Red wines of 1978 are reputed for their concentration, balance and exceptional longevity, with several still in fine form today.
