Description from the seller
Item Description
This is a hana-ire (flower basket) in a boat-shaped (funagata) design, hand-woven from split bamboo strips in the traditional Japanese kago style. The main body is constructed from dark, purple-brown lacquered bamboo strips arranged in a striking herringbone (yajirushi) weave that curves upward at both ends to form the elegant boat silhouette. Natural, lighter-toned bamboo strips are woven in an arching pattern around the rim, creating a layered visual contrast between the dark exterior weave and the warmer interior tones.
At the centre of the basket sits a removable cylindrical bamboo liner (mizuire), finished in red lacquer, designed to hold water for fresh flower arrangements (ikebana). The rim ends are bound with pale rattan wrapping, a traditional finishing technique that both reinforces the structure and adds decorative detail.
The basket carries a maker's signature reading Izumi (泉美), indicating it was produced by a bamboo craft workshop or artisan working in this name.
This piece would suit both formal ikebana practice and display as a sculptural object of Japanese craft.
