Description from the seller
Antique Onyx Lime-Calcareous Sculpture Depicting Two Tigers
Important decorative sculpture from the late 19th century / early 20th century, made in oriental lime-calcareous onyx originating from the Iranian area, a material highly valued between the late 1800s and early 1900s for producing prestigious works destined for aristocratic and bourgeois representative interiors.
The piece depicts two tigers in a dynamic and dramatic scene of struggle or pursuit, carved in the round on a single rocky base. The figures are rendered with great expressive power: gaping jaws, clearly defined fangs, taut musculature and natural movements, giving the composition a notable sense of tension and realism.
The workmanship is entirely manual, with excellent anatomical accuracy and meticulous detailing of the coat, heads, and paws, typical of oriental decorative productions aimed at the European market between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The stone shows a splendid natural veining in cream, honey, and ivory tones, with darker areas that accentuate the volume of the figures.
A sculpture with a strong visual and decorative impact, ideal as a centerpiece for salons, monumental entrances, or collections of period decorative art.
