Cigar box - Wood and metal - Durgerdam Lighthouse

A wooden lacquered cigarette box with a metal lid, executed in the Amsterdam School style from around 1920. The metal lid is rendered in bas-relief and depicts the lighthouse located on Vuurtoreneiland in Durgerdam, part of Amsterdam-Noord. The relief shows, besides the lighthouse, adorned with the three St. Andrew’s crosses of the city of Amsterdam, the rough waves and the dramatic skies with which the lighthouse had to contend. The sculptural details of the rendition reference the Amsterdam School.

Vuurtoreneiland is a small island just off the coast of Durgerdam. It was laid out in 1701 to place a beacon, marking the entrance to Amsterdam’s IJ. Initially the lighthouse was a square, stone building. This building was replaced in 1893 by an octagonal, conical, open-work tower of cast iron and profile steel, as is still present today and also a Rijksmonument (national monument).

The box is in excellent original condition and also structurally sound, including the hinges. The underside of the metal lid is blackened.

All in all, a rare and specially designed object, linked to Amsterdam’s history.
