Description from the seller
Devotional triptych of the Virgin with the Child – Flemish Renaissance-inspired
Elegant small foldable devotional triptych in architectural format, made of wood and decorated with gilded moldings and engraved ornamentation.
The central panel depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus in a scene of great maternal intimate. The composition is clearly inspired by models of Flemish Renaissance painting, particularly a well-known Virgin with Child composition associated with the circle of Jan Massys (Antwerp, 1510–1575). The side wings feature Marian-themed scenes set in interior architectural environments inspired by Renaissance motifs. The images are prints.
The structure presents interesting gilded decoration, with stepped moldings, pointed pediments, and ornamental motifs produced by incising/engraving. The hinges allow closing the wings, preserving the character of a small domestic altar or private devotion altarpiece.
Type: foldable devotional triptych
Theme: Virgin with the Child / Marian iconography
Material: wood, gilded decoration and decorated panels
Style: Flemish Renaissance / historicist revival
Era: late 19th century – first half of the 20th century
Height: 29 cm
Width: 24 cm
Depth: 2.5 cm
Weight: 355 g
It presents an attractive patina in the gilding, surface wear and small signs of use and age, coherent with its decorative and devotional character. The photographs form part of the description and allow appreciation of both the decoration and the condition.
