Description from the seller

Relief replica of the famous Romanesque capital “The Flight into Egypt” from the Saint-Lazare Cathedral in Autun, attributed to the workshop of master Gislebertus and today kept in the chapter house room / Musée Rolin.

The scene shows the Holy Family on their journey to Egypt according to the Gospel of Matthew: Saint Joseph guides the donkey while the Virgin Mary, seated in a very awkward position on the animal, holds the Child and a symbolic globe, all on a background decorated with flowers and fruits and a base of rosettes, just as in the XIIth-century original. It is a fragment molded in stone-like material (or resin imitating stone) mounted on a panel upholstered in red velvet and framed in a trapezoidal shape, conceived as a didactic or decorative piece that reproduces one of the great milestones of Burgundian Romanesque sculpture.

- Measurements: 20 x 19 centimeters.
