Description from the seller

Noon with Dollond London Brass Sun Dial with Compass – Blue Velvet Case – 1980s

Elegant and refined collectible instrument consisting of a sundial with compass, made of brass and accompanied by its blue velvet case.

A small object of great charm, capable of uniting in a single elegant composition two ancient instruments linked to navigation, orientation and time measurement. The construction recalls the tradition of fine scientific and nautical instruments and presents a strong scenic character despite its very small size.

The sundial with compass is a particularly interesting object for collectors of scientific, nautical and astronomical instruments. The presence of the compass allows proper orientation of the instrument while the sundial uses the position of the Sun to indicate the time.

The operating principle is that of ancient sundials: a small rod or gnomon projects its shadow onto the dial, and when the instrument is correctly oriented toward the North, the shadow allows reading the solar time indicated by the inscriptions on the dial.

The compass therefore plays a fundamental role in orienting the sundial, making this small instrument not only decorative but also an interesting example of a combination of astronomy, navigation and time measurement.

Main features

Type: sundial with compass

Material: brass

Brand: Dollond London

Era: 1980s

Operation: fully functional

Case: blue velvet

Closed dimensions: diameter about 5 cm, height about 2 cm

Condition

The instrument presents in excellent overall condition and is perfectly functional. Normal minor signs of wear consistent with the era and the vintage nature of the object are present. The blue velvet case completes the presentation elegantly and facilitates its conservation.

Notes

Object of remarkable collecting interest due to its small size, the combination of compass and sundial and the prestigious Dollond London reference.

Particularly dramatic when displayed with other vintage nautical, scientific or astronomical instruments. Thanks to its size it can be easily placed on a desk, a bookshelf, a display cabinet or within a collection devoted to the history of navigation.

A small object with great charm, ideal for collectors and enthusiasts of antique nautical instruments, astronomy, exploration and period scientific objects.
