Papier-mache - Nepal - second half of the 20th century

Fascinating ritual and decorative mask from the cultural and religious tradition of the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. This piece represents a deity or guardian of the local pantheon, typically associated with sacred dances and traditional Himalayan festivals (such as Indra Jatra celebrations). The mask is entirely handmade following historic artisan techniques, using a layered and compressed papier-mâché structure. This material, besides ensuring incredible lightness, once allowed dancers to wear it easily during prolonged ceremonies. The face features rich iconography: the pronounced features, large expressive eyes, and the third eye of wisdom (on the forehead) highlight the divine nature of the character. The upper part is crowned by a sumptuous crown adorned with sun motifs and miniatures of faces, finished with metallic details and bright hues on a green background. The back of the mask clearly shows the rough, genuine weave of the pressed papier-mâché, confirming the authenticity of the manual workmanship. There is also the original ring or cord at the top, ready for wall display.
