Antique hand-carved oak wood furniture ornament from Antwerp, dating to the 20th century, measuring 82 × 20 × 4 cm and weighing 2 kg, in good condition with minor signs of aging and spots.
Description from the seller
Antique hand-carved oak furniture ornament – richly openworked – ca. 1870–1900 – 82 cm
Impressive and exceptionally large antique wooden furniture or architectural ornament, executed in rich hand-carved and openworked wood, oak.
The ornament has a pronounced symmetrical composition with a central elevated round cartouche, surrounded by bold volutes, stylized foliate motifs, and small finely worked flowers and fruits. The different levels in the carving create a pleasing sense of depth.
What is notable is the traditional construction. From the back it is clearly visible that several decorative components were crafted separately and attached to the base with wooden pins. Manual gouge and cut marks and small irregularities are also visible, in keeping with artisanal manufacture.
The long, gracefully flaring ends and the substantial width of 82 cm give the ornament a monumental look. It is likely that it originally formed part of a richly appointed piece of furniture, a cabinet, a mirror surround, or interior paneling as a crowning element or decorative feature.
Dating: probably the second half of the 19th century, circa 1870–1880
Material: presumably oak
Dimensions: ca. 82 × 20 × 4 cm
Construction: hand-carved, openworked and partly assembled from separately applied components
The ornament is in an authentic, used condition with signs of age, wear and local old crackling.
These are clearly shown in the photos. It has intentionally not been restored, preserving the historical look and patina.
A decorative and in its size a very striking piece of historic wood carving, which also lends itself well to being presented as a standalone wall ornament.
