This is an Japanese pottery matcha tea bowl (chawan) crafted by the respected ceramic artist Hattori Kanpō (服部勘峰) at the Mihama Kiln (御浜窯).

[Features & Aesthetics]
Glaze & Finish: Coated in a deep, rich "Takase Iron Glaze" (Takase-tetsuyu), displaying a subtle metallic shine with dark glossy tonal depth.

[Form & Craftsmanship]
Features a smooth, rounded profile designed to sit naturally and comfortably in the hands. The interior includes a well-formed bottom (chadamari) optimal for whisking matcha smoothly, while the unglazed base (kodai) reveals raw clay texture with a distinct spiral tool mark (tokin).

[Markings]
Impressed artist/kiln seal mark near the base (Kanpō / Mihama).

[Packaging]
Includes the original wooden box (Tomobako), inscribed, signed, and sealed by the artist, tied with traditional fabric ribbon (sanadahimo).

[About Mihama Kiln (御浜窯) – A Vanished Modern Heritage]
The Origin (1959):
Located in Mihama Town, Mie Prefecture (Southern Kii Peninsula)—a region historically lacking pottery production due to a scarcity of clay. The kiln’s history began in 1959 with the discovery of local iron-rich stone (Shiramine Touseki) and the founding of Kisei Ceramics under technical guidance from the prefectural ceramic research center.

The Unique Dark Glaze:
Initially, the iron content in the local clay was considered a drawback for producing white ceramics. However, the artisans turned this characteristic into a defining strength by developing specialized dark glazes (such as Tenmoku glaze inspired by the region's famous glossy black Nachiguro stone). This yielded a distinctively rich, heavy, and metallic coloration that reflects the deep essence of the Pacific Ocean (Kumano Sea).

Stoneware (炻器):
Fired at high temperatures exceeding 1,200°C, Mihama ware is classified as stoneware (Sekki), possessing qualities between earthenware and porcelain. It is exceptionally durable, non-porous, and emits a clear tone when tapped, combining rugged earthy textures with refined functional beauty.

Rarity:
Although Mihama ware gained high acclaim among collectors in Tokyo, Osaka, and overseas during the late 20th century, the kiln operated for just 47 years before closing permanently in 2006. As it is no longer produced, surviving pieces in pristine condition with their original tomobako are highly sought-after collector's items.
