Roagna – Barolo Pira "Vecchie Viti" 2020
A monumental lot for traditional Barolo connoisseurs and rare wine investors: Roagna's Barolo Pira "Vecchie Viti" 2020. This extraordinary wine stems from the historic Cru Pira in Castiglione Falletto, a Roagna family stronghold. The Nebbiolo grapes come exclusively from the oldest vines in the parcel, with monumental demi-lots dating back to 1937. The winemaking is pure artisanal craft: fermentation with native yeasts, an interminable submerged-cap maceration (up to two and a half months) and a slow aging of five years in large neutral oak casks. The 2020 vintage combines impressive density with a timeless elegance, awarded 98/100 by James Suckling and 97+/100 by Antonio Galloni. A production run of about 2,000 bottles worldwide.
Nose: Hypnotic, deep, and continually unfolding. It expresses warm notes of wild strawberry, ripe cherry, and candied orange zest, which evolve into complex scents of licorice, tar, pine needles, iron-rich earth, and balsamic undergrowth.
Palate: Powerful, muscular yet incredibly velvety. The sip has exceptional dynamics, driven by vibrant freshness and finely textured, chalky tannins that are perfectly integrated. The salty, mineral finish is virtually endless.
Storage: A collectible bottle in perfect condition (level, capsule and label intact). Always stored lying down in a temperature- and humidity-controlled environment.
