A fascinating and rare specimen of traditional coconut grater, originating from Southeast Asia (Thailand/Myanmar area), entirely hand-carved from a single block of tropical hardwood. This iconic tool of Asian culinary culture features a rare and beautiful stylized zoomorphic shape depicting a dog, characterized by drooping ears and extended front legs. In the mouth is inserted the original wrought iron handle that ends with a circular serrated disc blade, historically used to grate the fresh coconut flesh. The intended use had the operator straddling the animal’s back to stabilize it with their body weight. The object presents in an exceptionally genuine state of preservation, and the wood shows a magnificent dark patina polished by time and by its ancient use, enriched by natural vertical cracks and crevices along the back and tail that certify its authenticity and natural aging of the solid wood. The iron blade shows a surface oxidation characteristic, which does not affect the definition of the teeth.
