These few pieces from the Hermès museum bear witness to the art of lanternists, who doubled and often enhanced that of the coaches, as soon as one claimed to ride in the dark. King of the Belgians, Khedive of Egypt, seductive adventurer, Napoleon’s emissary, everything moved in the closed night thanks to these lanterns whose flame at a gallop spread through the darkness as much a passion for movement as the sacred artisanal fire.
