Cortendorf – Grand capercaillie in polychrome ceramic and artisanal rooster – Germany and Europe – 1956-1980
The first sculpture depicts a majestic capercaillie (also known as the great black grouse), perched on a trunk. The plumage is rendered in high relief in a rich palette of browns, greens, coppers and golds. It bears on the underside of the base the mark of the German manufacturer Cortendorf. West Germany, around 1956-1973. Height: 38 cm.
The second sculpture depicts a rooster with a proud and fanciful bearing. Entirely molded in clay, it features a remarkable speckled glazed decoration in shades of pink, green, cream and burgundy. The unglazed underside preserves concentric marks from the wheel, characteristic of artisanal work. Probably France or Italy, around 1950-1980.
