Circa 1900 European Silver Louis Coin Holder – 800 Silver, Double Compartment
Elegant antique silver Louis coin holder featuring a compact rectangular form with cut corners and gently domed surfaces. Its refined linear decoration and ingenious double-compartment interior make it an attractive example of European personal accessories from the late 19th to early 20th century.
Key Details
Origin & period: European workmanship, circa 1900.
Material & hallmark: 800/1000 silver, bearing the French “Charançon” (weevil) control mark, used for imported silver.
Design: Rectangular case with chamfered corners, decorated with alternating polished bands and fine parallel grooves. A suspension ring allows it to be attached to a chain.
Interior: Hinged lid opening to reveal two circular coin compartments, each fitted with an engraved/textured retaining mechanism.
Dimensions: 6.7 × 3.1 × 1 cm (2.64 × 1.22 × 0.39 in).
Weight & condition: Gross weight 28 g. Good antique condition with surface scratches, light marks and natural signs of age and use, visible in the photographs.
