Dutch Art Deco Amsterdam School Wall Sconce, 1920s A highly decorative Dutch Art Deco wall sconce in the Amsterdam School style, dating from the 1920s. The lamp has a wonderfully sculptural construction, built around a dark patinated metal backplate with a characteristic silhouette. Rounded forms are interrupted by pointed projections, while the outer edge is finished with a continuous row of small hammered or embossed details, giving the metalwork a particularly handcrafted appearance. In front of the backplate sits a three-dimensional metal framework supporting the fabric. The framework projects dramatically forward and culminates in a pronounced central point. When illuminated, the bulb lights the textile from within, creating a warm glow while emphasizing the geometry of the shade. The present patterned fabric is not original to the Amsterdam School period and was most probably added around the 1960s. This does, however, make the lamp particularly interesting for someone wishing to adapt it. The existing metal framework could relatively easily be reupholstered in a more period-appropriate Art Deco or batiked textile, or alternatively in a lighter plain fabric. A narrow fringe along the lower edge could also work beautifully and would give the lamp a more luxurious 1920s character. Even in its present form, the combination of the dark metal, pointed silhouette and patterned textile gives the lamp considerable presence. Condition: Good vintage condition. The metal shows an attractive aged patina. The fabric is a later replacement, estimated circa 1960, and can be retained or replaced according to preference.
