Description from the seller

Thomas Bernstein – "Across Gorges", 1991

Color-rich color lithography by the German sculptor, draftsman and performer Thomas Bernstein (born 1957). The work “Across Gorges” was created in 1991 and belongs to the graphic series “Six Excursions” by Griffelkunst. The expressive, abstracted visual language combines bold color fields with a taut, spatially evocative composition.

Artist: Thomas Bernstein (born 1957 in Mündersbach, Westerwald)
Title: Across Gorges
Year: 1991
Dimensions: approx. 43 × 59 cm, sheet size
Technique: color lithography on paper
Signature: verso, hand-signed in pencil
Series: “Six Excursions”
Publisher: Griffelkunst
Condition: aged accordingly, please refer to the images

Thomas Bernstein studied sculpture at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Tony Cragg and Fritz Schwegler. In addition to his sculptural work, he developed a versatile body of drawings, prints, and performances. From 2006 to 2012, Bernstein was a professor overseeing beginners at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts (HFBK). His works often deal with human communication, physicality, movement, and absurd or everyday situations.

“Across Gorges” showcases Bernstein's characteristic engagement with space, form and perception. The colorful, graphically condensed composition feels both bodily and abstract. Different color and form areas enter into a tense relationship with each other, creating the impression of a deep, hard-to-define spatiality. The work exemplifies Bernstein's autonomous visual language between figuration, abstraction, and sculptural thinking.
