Balinese/Indonesian carved wooden chopstick set consisting of a long decorative storage box with a sliding lid and eight wooden chopsticks (four pairs), about 27 × 9 × 4 cm, dating to the second half of the 20th century and in good vintage condition.
Description from the seller
Decorative vintage set of carved wooden chopsticks, stylistically attributed to traditional Balinese/Indonesian craftsmanship.
The ensemble consists of an elongated, richly ornamented wooden box with a sliding lid and a total of eight wooden chopsticks (four pairs).
The lid of the box is particularly elaborately worked. The dark brown wooden surface bears a three-dimensional carved gecko/lizard motif as well as a frog. The depiction is complemented by geometric and vegetative carving ornaments and contrasting light brown sun- or blossom-shaped appliqués. As a result, the box possesses a pronounced decorative character independent of its original function.
Inside are eight long wooden chopsticks. Several sticks feature individually and plastically carved end pieces. Box and chopsticks form a cohesive decorative ensemble.
Comparable pieces are attributed to Balinese woodwork from Indonesia. There is no signature, maker’s mark, or original documentation. Therefore, origin and dating are deliberately given as attributions. The set likely dates from the second half of the 20th century.
The box measures approximately 27 × 9 × 4 cm.
The item is in good used vintage condition. Signs of age and use as well as slight irregularities in the hand-worked wood surface are present. Please note the numerous close-up photos; they show the actual condition in great detail.
The set is suitable both as a decorative collectible of Balinese woodcarving and as an unusual tabletop accessory.
