An ancient manuscript leaf from the poetic works of by Jalal al-Din Mohammad Balkhi, popularly known as Mawlawi, Mawlana, and Rumi, from the city of Balkh of the Greater Khorasan (North Afghanistan) and one of its most famous poets. His full name was “Mohammad ibn Mohammad ibn Hossein Hosseini Khatibi Bakri Balkhi” and during his lifetime he was called “Jalal al-Din”, “Khodawandegar” and "Mawlana Khodawandegar”. Rumi is undoubtedly the most prominent poets in the field of mysticism and mystical love poems. This folio, dated midC18th (1750-60) is scribed in fine black nasta’liq in an extremely cultured hand, with some questions and commentary in the margins. It consists of 4 columns of 19 lines of script, with each line divided by a 'gold cloud' device. The second and third columns have three lines if script in Red, but it has not been possible to identify these as of particular significance, such as Chapter or verse headings. Gold and blue frame lines surround the text, and there is a faint columnar margin with arabesque floral decoration towards the edges of the page.
