These nuggets come from the desert region of Tiris Zemmour in northern Mauritania, more than a hundred kilometers from an area called Guelb Ndour.
Gold mining in this country was previously reserved for a large industrial company. But since 2016 individual mining has been authorized through metal detectors.
I offer them as I found them; I have only cleaned them with soapy water.
The gold from this region is fairly pure; in general its purity is around 950 to 980 thousandths, which corresponds to 22.80 to 23.50 carats.
Although gold mining has become one of Mauritania’s main resources, nuggets are quite rare because almost all of the gold is melted into bars that are then sent to Dubai.
