Cosmographia by Sebastian Münster, illustrated edition in German, original language German, published in 1628, 926 pages, 38 x 27 cm, bound edition, condition: fair.
Description from the seller
“Cosmographia, that is: a description of the entire world, in which all monarchies, empires, kingdoms, principalities, counts’ and lords’ dominions, lands” Sebastian Münster 1628.
Significant fragment of the last edition of the famous Cosmographia by Sebastian Münster. With numerous woodcuts including city views, maps, portraits as well as representations of exotic animals and indigenous peoples.
Of the originally 26 full-page maps, 5 are preserved: the map of Hungary (Map No. 15), Transylvania (No. 16), Slavonia/Balkan (No. 17), Greece under Turkish occupation (No. 20) and Taprobana/Sri Lanka (No. 24).
There are also 9 double-page city views as well as a double-page view of the “Sea Wonders and Strange Animals.”
Many pages are missing, including the entire 3rd-4th part, about Gaul and Italy. For Part 8 and 9, no pages are missing, thus the requested parts on Africa and America are completely preserved.
The missing pages are:
Title page, 53-58, 83-86, 143-600, 653-656, 677-806, 809-820, 823-838, 841-864, 869/70, 875/76, 879-888, 891-894, 901/02, 913-916, 921/22, 925-928, 933/34, 937/38, 943-946, 949/50, 953-956, 959-964, 971/72, 991/92, 995-1000, 1019-1024, 1039-1042, 1055-1058, 1067-1070, 1073-1084, 1087/88, 1091-1094, 1099-1102, 1105-1108, 1117-1120, 1135-1138, 1147-1150, 1187-1190, 1195-1200, 1207-1210, 1247/48, 1255-1260, 1279-1282, 1287-1290, 1299/1300, 1303/04, 1309-1312, 1319/20, 1333-1336, 1493-1500, 1505-1508
At the beginning, a few pages are partially loosened, pages 601-603, 839/40 and 1071/72 are loose.
The pages are overall well preserved, they are partly browned and somewhat spotted. Pages 1159-1168 are, in the upper part, strongly brown-spotted. The beginning pages have some small damages in the lower corner area.
The binding has 6 of 8 corner clasps as well as a clasp. The spine of the binding is brittle due to the missing pages. With 1 of 2 clasps. The existing clasp would be functional if the missing pages were reinserted, or something could be placed inside the book as a compensating insert.
The book is delivered together with a book as a supplement for the missing pages, as this supports the binding.
The inner cover possesses 3 mounted ex Libris.
Collation: 11 (of 12) leaves, 10 (of 52) leaves (front matter maps), 926 (of 1752) pages
