Statue, Vier Afrikaanse Maria beelden - 36 cm - Ebony

Beautiful set of four hand-carved African wooden Mary figures. The figures have a slender, elongated form and are depicted with folded hands in a praying or serene pose.
African likely Kenya or Tanzania
circa 1970-1980

Material: The figures are made of a dark, dense wood. It seems partially like two-tone ebony, where the contrast between the dark heartwood and the lighter, yellow/orange sapwood is consciously used in the design.

Style: This type of stylized woodcarving is characteristic of tribal and traditional art from various regions in East- and West Africa (such as Kenya or Tanzania). In the Western art trade they are also often associated with images of the 'Black Madonna' because of their serene and devout-looking pose.

Dimensions: respectively 29.5 cm, 32 cm, 35 cm and 36 cm high.

Condition: good condition, of course signs of use. And one figure stands with difficulty.
